| Carrybridge • Introduction An anglers dream. A little piece of fishing paradise in Fermanagh's lakelands that attracts visitors from throughout Europe and beyond. It is a place where the European visitors can dream of spending hours on the banks of the Erne, and the English can enjoy the unique Fermanagh tranquillity. The area is not only rich in friendship and fish however. If a historian were to turn his attention to the area just a downwind cast away from Carrybridge, he would hook enough stories and anecdotes to invoke envy in even the most successful of anglers.
The village was built around the local church, which has been in existence for 160 years. Although originally the local school, the pupils soon moved across the road, and the church came into being. Built by landlord John Porter, who was resident on the nearby Belle Isle estate, the church was extended in 1883 to form the place of worship that is every bit as picturesque today as it was generations ago.
Belle Isle Estate The jewel in the crown of the area is the fabulous Belle Isle estate, which has dominated the neighbourhood for centuries. The island, which was originally known as Ballymacmanus, has been inhabited since the eleventh century, and up until 1607 was home to generations of the MacManus family. Historically, Cathal Og MacManus is one of the most important figures in the history of Ireland, and it was from Belle Isle on the shores of Upper Lough Erne that he compiled the Annals of Ulster, which is regarded as the most valuable source of information for the early history of Ireland.
