Crom - Environmental Learning Day - Great Success!
05/05/2009
Top marks go to young people from Counties Fermanagh and
Monaghan, who demonstrated their creative talents during a celebratory event at
Crom.
The National Trust in the county marked Earth Day with the launch of an
exciting environmental learning programme.
Guests, who attended last Wednesday’s celebrations at Crom demesne, near
Newtownbutler, learned what some of the participating schools did as part of
the project.
The environmental learning programme, which has been developing over the
past few months, involves formal opportunities along with fun family action and
community learning through volunteering across all three National Trust
properties in Fermanagh.
The Trust’s School Arts Partnership Schools, St. Mary’s Primary School,
Newtownbutler, and Three Mile House National School, Monaghan displayed
creations, including their eye-catching mosaic of old Crom Castle.
The children, who worked with a number of artists, imaginatively created
their own personal responses to the unique, historic landscape of Crom.
Their teachers explained how each of the classes involved had gained new
knowledge and awareness of such a beautiful and important estate.
Supported by Sky, the partnership encourages cross-community links and
encourages a sense of ownership and appreciation of heritage and the
countryside.
A walk to the old yew trees in the grounds of old Crom Castle was led by
pupils from Moat Primary School, Crom’s Guardianship School. Some mulching as
part of their caretaking role was also carried out. The Moat Primary projects
are linked to the National Trust’s Community Gardening Scheme, helping children
to grow their own food.
